I moved to Rogers Park in 1989, the same year
I started working as a studio assistant for Paul Elledge Phography.
I have lived in the area, uaually along the lakefront since. Prior
to that I had lived in Bloomington, Indiana where I studied, among
other things, photography, at Indiana University's School of Fine
Arts.
In 1991, I started a series of portraits of children along the
Loyola Beach lakefront, five of which are shown here. I wanted to
use the image of children to express the sadness or disillusion
we as adults feel at times. At the same time, an inordinate number
of children in Chicago were dying from the result of gang warfare.
The fear of violence was keeping many from ever experiencing anything
resembling a happy childhood. I purposely used chromatic lighting
and the lake as a backdrop to illustrate this idea. This series
was partially funded by a CAAP grant from the City of Chicago's
Department of Cultural Affairs. I later expanded this series to
include friends who had lived in Rogers Park, most of them artists
like myself, I chose soft window light and non-descript rooms to
depict more of the interior space of an artist's expression.
I currently work as a graphic designer and production artist and
from time to time still photograph.
