| Jesus Macarena-Avila is an internationally known artist,communitybased
arts educator,and lecturer who lives and works in Rogers Park.
Not only has he exhibited his art in Rogers Park, and all over America,
but all over the world including: Australia, Brazil, France, Mexico, South
Africa, Senegal, Spain and Zambia. Publications such as Art
Throb, Dialogue, New Art Examiner and El Portaliano/
Fundacion Diego Portales have highlighted his studio
work and community art projects.
Macarena-Avila received his MFA degree from the Vermont College
of Norwich University and studied in the fiber,
painting and sculpture departments at the School of
the Art Institute, where he earned his BFA.
In Chicago, Macarena-Avila works as a community based
arts educator with many social service organizations.
Macarena-Avila’s past curatorial projects has been
exhibited with VUSpace with Victoria University,
Melbourne, Australia; Malcolm X College, Chicago,
Illinois and Polvo Chicago, Illinois. Upcoming 2006
curatorial projects will be exhibited at Gallery Visio
with the University of Missouri - St. Louis, St. Louis
Missouri; and Polvo, Chicago, Illinois.
Macarena-Avila has lectured at educational and arts
institutions such as: Antioch College (Yellow Springs,
Ohio); Australian National University (Canberra,
Australia); Columbia College Chicago (Chicago,
Illinois); Community Arts Project (Cape Town South
Africa); Northern Illinois University (DeKalb
Illinois). Including Victoria University (Melbourne,
Australia); University of Missouri at Saint Louis
(Saint Louis Missouri); Victorian College for the Arts
(Melbourne, Australia) and Witswander University
(Johannesburg, South Africa).
