| Statement
As a realist painter and printmaker, my art revolves between the
visual language of the particular medium and an investigation of
my subject. Each medium brings a particular language, which deeply
affects the meaning in any work. If the medium is exceptionally
portable, then it brings certain perspectives to the fore. If, for
instance with relief prints, the language is a series of stark,
black or white decisions, it highlights the dual nature of ambiguity
and clarity. The compositions and meaning are constantly modified
through the attention I pay during the process of its creation.
That being said, the drawings, often 10 feet wide,
enable me to explore the subjectivity and curving nature of space
already familiar in the manner of reportage. In the Linocuts, I
continue this interest, but often take it into some of the local
gang hotspots, at least as they were before the security camera.
In a series of friends and family, I try to tease out a fuller portrait
than a likeness by using all the elements of my studio and their
collaborative input. |
