Carl Bogaard
Long Time Resident of Rogers Park
Interview by Eve Brownstone
Carl was a participant in the Rogers Park Personal Oral History Project in 2004. He accompanied me to The Governor's Conference on Aging  in December of 2004. During our presentation he dropped and gave the audience thirty push-ups which he does everyday to keep fit. He encouraged the rest of us to do the same.

Where were you born and raised?
I was born and raised in the area of Chicago Ave. and Ashland. It was a Polish neighborhood at the time. That was 88 years ago. Wow!

Does your age keep you from or encourage to do things that you enjoy?
I am very fortunate to be in good health for my age.

What are you passionate about?
I love to play tennis, in order to play well, I have to be fit. I do many kinds of exercises to keep me flexible. I do some exercises that some younger people cannot do such as: push-ups, sit-ups, the Yoga Plow and others.

Any life lessons to share with the younger generation?
Since I grew up during the Depression I know what hard times can be. I learned that you should not spend every dollar as soon as you earn it. You should save a little a little every week so you would have something to tide you over in an emergency.

What do you like about Rogers Park?
We moved to Rogers Park in 1952, because it was quiet, stable, and affordable neighborhood. Transportation, shopping and all conveniences are here.

Which five people (living or dead) would you invite to a dinner party?
Thomas Edison, Dale Carnegie, Jimmy Connors, Jesus Christ, Alan Greenspan

What places in Rogers Park, past or present, have special meaning to you?
The house my first wife and I bought at 2309 W. Estes in 1952 was very special. My kids grew up there. Saint Margaret Mary Church was another special place.  I practiced my religion. I met and married my second wife Mary Ann there. We met through a church sponsored bowling league thirteen years ago. We were both in our seventies.
