Charlotte Walters/Changing Community One Costume at a Time
Charlotte Walters, the owner of Lost Eras, 1511 W. Howard, comes from a
long line of Charlottes. Her mom Charlotte Simmons, founder of Lost Eras
back in 1969 was one of the first "alternative living types" in Rogers
Park. It was part antique/costume shop and part alternative healing
center. Her daughter Charlotte Walters has run this antiques/costume shop
that boasts one million costumes since 1986.
What is Lost Eras?
It is an antique and costume/theater prop shop. We have one million
costumes anything from Mister Time to Victorian Gowns. I am an obsessive
collector and this shop has become a wonderful outlet for my creativity. We
have customers all over the world through the Internet www.losteras.com.
Our big business comes from theater productions. Last years we provided
costumes and props to 50 productions in the area. *While I was in the
store a student costume designer from Northwestern came in to find clothes
for "The Rocky Horror Picture Show".
Do you have any favorite costumes?
It is hard to choose. We had a CEO of an insurance company dress as Father
Time to tell some of his sales team that their time was up. Aflak is
renting 1920s costumes for a corporate party for their employees. They are
turning Double Decker buses into a Speak Easy from the 1920s.
What is an early memory of Rogers Park?
My family moved back to Rogers Park in 1967. At fifteen, I remember being
a member of a motorcycle gang called the Greenleaf Beach Club. There were
three hundred members. We would just drive around together. Sometimes if
we were bored we would call the police on ourselves.
You are also a long-time community activist, how have you seen Howard
Street change?
I want to start by saying Howard Street is unique. We want to keep its
unique flare. I've been a Commissioner of the SSA #19 for ten years. At
the SSA we want to change the perception of people about Howard. People
still say Howard is dangerous. I used to advertise "Take a walk on the
wild side, come to Howard Street." Those days are over. We have more
security, people are buying property. Some artists tell me they find the
pulse of the city on Howard St. Something we do need here are the funds
promised for Streetscape. The west wide of Howard's streetscape project is
complete. The east side's funds went to Morse Ave.
Which five famous people living or dead would you invite to a dinner party?
Jim Morrison, Jimmy Hendrix, Sid Vicious, Elvis and Minnie Riperton
What have you learned about life working on Howard St. for 21 years?
Everything good and bad comes back to you. What you want in life you got
to put out there. It does come back to you.
