*since the writing of this interview, Under the Table Books has closed.
I recently sat down to talk with Julie and Rocky Marcus,
owner and faithful mascot of Under the Table Books formerly Open Brain Books.
The bookstore is located at 1443 W. Jarvis and telephone is (773)-743-3728.
Who is Rocky?
Rocky is my mascot, best friend, my dog. He is friendly and loves to help customers pick out books in exchange for being petted. I like that this is a dog friendly neighborhood. I met Rocky at the Anti-Cruelty Society where I have been volunteering. It was love at first bark.
What made you come to Rogers Park and buy this bookstore?
Oddly enough, I was thinking about starting a bookstore in my own neighborhood around Lincoln and Irving a year ago. I couldn't afford the rents as my neighborhood changed so quickly. I recently saw a Reader ad and came up here on a lark never thinking that it would be a realistic possibility to buy it. But once I met John Stevenson, the former owner, it became a possibility and I pursued it.
Did you have a background in books?
No, I have a background as a lawyer. The only thing I have published was
in the law journal at my law school. But I can remember the first thing I loved to
do was read. Opening this bookstore full-time is a dream come true for me.
What is your vision for the bookstore?
I want to focus on the art of writing. I want this bookstore to be a place
that encourages and celebrates writing and reading. I was taught that writing
was something you do as a hobby. Now it is possible for anyone to pursue writing as a career, including myself. I feel inspired here.
What are some things you want to bring to the neighborhood?
I have a lot of friends that are performers in the stand-up and
improvisation worlds. I have been doing improvisation myself for six years. I want to have play readings, story-time with children and feature new writers. I would also like to foster volunteerism, community, and the arts.
What are your hours?
Hours for Under the Table Bookstore: Wednesday-Friday 1pm-7pm
Saturday and Sunday 10am-6pm and closed Monday and Tuesday.
Why call the bookstore Under the Table?
My first favorite place to read was under the dining room table. I also like the idea that you aren't sure what it means. Part of what I like about writing is that you bring your own interpretation to it. I believe that if the love of reading is instilled early enough it will be with you for your whole life.
What do you like about Rogers Park so far?
I like this rich diverse community. People are excited about things here and I feel inspired.
