Tim Jackson, 46, cartoonist for such papers as Chicago Defender and Capital Tallahassee Outlook in Tallahassee makes his home in Rogers Park. Recently,Tim sat down with me at Cafe Ennui to talk about his cartoons, a new book: Attack of the Political Cartoonists and Rogers Park and life as we know it. "I have been cartooning as long as I can remember. I had been working towards that in everything I did. In the late eighties, I got something published and people started accepting what I did. I have always tried to make cartoons that make people think.. go hmmm. I have created cartoons with universal
themes. Some topics have been: AIDS, race, women's issues, politics and how government treats people."
Tim has called Rogers Park home since 1991. He is a homeowner. This Dayton, Ohio native in 1982, published his first book of cartoons and in 2000 joined the Chicago Defender as their cartoonist. Recently, Tim collaborated with other cartoonists around the country to create an anthology of editorial cartoons called: Attack of the Political Cartoonists.
Here are some factoids from the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists
about their anthology:
"Attack of the Political Cartoonists" profiles 150 editorial cartoonists currently being published in newspapers, magazines and online, and collects almost 600 cartoons under one cover."
"Attack" is the first book of its kind in 42 years. The last time a collection this large was published was in 1962; a 296-page book titled "Today's Cartoon," edited by John Chase, that profiled 140 of the editorial cartoonists in North America at that time." Tim is proud to be apart of this effort. Look for three cartoons of Tim's on page 66.
When Tim is not working on cartoons, he serves as Art Director for Blue Cross
Blue Shield and puts out their newspaper, LifeTimes. Tim enjoys living in Rogers
Park. "I like living near the lake and the small town feel of the place."
