Rogers Park has a long tradition of welcoming in as residents many people experiencing oppression from around the world.
View this six minute mini documentary about Rogers Park’s Sullivan High School soccer team, made by a NY filmmaker, Anthony Peeling, released just last week, the same week that our President characterized certain countries where many of our players came from as being “shithole countries.”
Or, this video, made by Sullivan digital media students, featuring refugee students attending a Thanksgiving celebration last November.
Last weekend’s winter freeze caused the pole mounted on the rocks off of our beach off of Jarvis to remind us of what our community stands for!
Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!
(Thank to Heather Miller for this great depiction, and to my new neighbor Barb Moore for being one of the first to publicly point out (via facebook) the interesting ice formations building on this pole.)
